Originally and 1800s stable, then the Plaza movie theater with a balcony, the Tao Restaurant in New York is now a beautiful Asian "temple" with 3 levels, 2 bars, sushi bar.  There is a cool skybox 35 up where you can eat and see everyone.  I love the amazing 16 foot tall Buddha "floats" above a serene reflecting pool with beautiful Japanese carp (goldfish).  You may not always need reservations at other top restaurants, but you'll need them at this place.  This is the place athletes and celebrities come when they want great food in Manhattan.

It has amazing Japanese and Thai, and also Hong Kong Chinese, and the Tao Restaurant in New York City usually charges $20-$30 for entrees, so meals are usually $30-$50/each.  Lunch has a prix fixe menu for $20.
